Not Enough

Not enough words to adequately say why I have been so blessed.

Not enough room to hold all of the family at one table.

Not enough room on the table to hold all of the Thanksgiving Feast.

Not enough time spent with loved ones.

Not enough tomorrows so I plan to spend today wisely.

Twilight and more

I love the books! As for the movie - they are never as good as the books and Twilight was no exception. IMO, the special effects were not so great. Anxiously waiting for the 5th book, not so anxious for additional movies.

Gratitude

This entails so many different aspects of my life. November is a time for thanksgiving in a very real way. It marks our wedding anniversary (25 years now); it comes between both mine and Larry's birthday; it brings the march toward the upcoming holidays; we gather at Stake Conference with other faithful members of our church to be counselled.

I am grateful for our health, our home, our children, our friends and extended family. I am grateful for my husband, our commitment, our church family, my calling as YW President, and the youth I work with. I am grateful for the country we live in. I am thankful to live close enough to visit the House of the Lord without too many difficulties. I am thankful for the scriptures, a living prophet of God which guides us in these difficult times. These and much more are among the things I am thankful for. Most of all I am thankful for my Savior and the great gift of the Atonement.

I am extremely blessed!

Just For The Record

Leave home around 7:30 a.m.; pick up Erica from the Community College so her mom can attend classes; hot-foot Rianne-Kelly to the DMV so she can get learner's permit today.

Then realization sets in: I didn't read carefully what was required and came up short!

A trip back home provides an opportunity to say final goodbyes to sleepy headed family members and to retrieve her SS Card and then a trip to the highschool for verification that she had met the academic requirements needed. A quick stop to my sister's work to deliver some cake then another stop for gas to ensure we could make it to Morehead. A glance at my watch lets me know I have 15 minutes before my meeting at the Civic Center begins for the substitute teachers. A couple of parking spaces may be available in the outer most edges of the lots (although it seems unlikely) but I am late! What is one to do? Find a grassy spot without a "Do Not Park On Grass" sign and park. Squeeze out between the very narrow opening of the door due to the tree that prevents the door from opening any wider. Hail down the cop that is patroling through to ensure a ticket won't be on my windshield when I return; leaving both RK and Erica to enjoy the breeze and the radio. Return to vehicle 20 minutes later and proceed to the DMV for the second time today with a child who has been strapped in a carseat for 3 1/2 hours and is ready to move about freely.

At the DMV: We enjoy a 2 hour wait and leave with Learner's permit in hand. The drive home went well. Both of us did better than either expected. I am so proud of us!

Fun, fun, fun!

The Peacock family arrived many hours later than we had expected on Saturday. They were pretty tired having traveled from Grande Prairie to catch their flight in Edmonton, Canada. They finally arrived in Florida caught a fairly decent night's sleep and began their journey to North Carolina. After more stops than they had planned they finally made it.

Their boys have grown a ton in the past 5 years. They were very good boys while visiting with us. They loved the ocean and our dogs. They couldn't get enough of either of them. We almost had to drag them away from the water and shoreline. I have the sunkissed skin to prove it!

When the boys were asked what the best part of the trip was while in NC they both agreed the ocean, boating and tubing was the best, but my cooking came in 2nd best. Not too shabby, huh?

Many hours were spent enjoying their company. Even though we talked and talked for hours on end for days and days they were very careful to keep a secret. One of my sister-in-laws called to share the secret...when she and her husband visit in October they won't be alone. The oldest sister will be visiting too! If only Tim could make it we would have the pleasure of visiting with all of Larry's siblings.

In the driver's seat

One day of driving and she asks to drive me to church.
Two days of driving and she proclaims "the teacher says I've improved".
Tomorrow will make day three. After that she is set free. A trip to the Licensing Department will ensure that she can legally get beneath the wheel. Thank goodness she has one full year before she can get her limited license. Where are the toothpicks? I don't want to blink.

Am I ready for this?

I can't believe it! Rianne-Kelly starts driving tomorrow. I know I've been through this three times already, but this is my BABY! Everybody buckle up and keep your eyes open. Seriously, I'm not worried about her capabilities; it's just how fast the time is going. I think 3 days of Drivers Ed and then a permit. On the positive side at least I will have a chauffeur.

Company's Coming!

Almost all of Larry's family lives far enough away that we consider them company when they visit. This would mean they need to stay over a day or more to make the trip feasible. Fortunately, they love us enough to plan and carry out their plans for visiting.

Larry was raised as an only child by his maternal grandmother. The two of them moved to the coast when he was just three years old. Larry was not an only child. He has two younger brothers and two younger sisters. Most of their childhood was spent a part from one another. Not due to his mom and siblings choice! Granny was rather successful in keeping them apart. There were a few times when Granny was unsuccessful at keeping them seperated, but she was very successful at guarding the situation at all times.

It wasn't until his senior year in highschool before he was allowed to spend time with them that was not beneath Granny's watchful eye! Larry was quick to accept the others as loved ones and would have loved to have had more time with them. Granny and Larry's stepfather had a disagreement and their time together was cut short.

A few years later... (Mikal and Larry meet, fall in love and marry) I decide enough of this nonsense! My children WILL know they have other family!!! Contact is made and we build a relationship almost from the foundation up. Larry and I now enjoy frequent contact with his family as well as mine. We truly love each other!

All but one of his siblings live outside of the USA and have for about 20 years. They live in Grande Prairie and Grand Cache in Alberta, Canada. Both places are extremely beautiful. They are not a military family. His stepfather is a Baptist preacher and moved to the area to establish a new church there. This year we will be fortunate to have both his youngest brother and sister come for a visit.

Wes and his family will be here this weekend. They will stay almost a week. They have two boys. I will post pictures and stories in relation to their visit. In early October his youngest sister, Wendy will be visiting for about a week with her husband. Their children will not be making the trip with them this time. Aunt Ruth will be here during Wendy's visit too. I am sure he won't be travelling alone so we open our hearts, home, freezer and pantry to whomever will be here.

We have been given such a beautiful world to enjoy. No matter where I have travelled I see so much beauty and experience so many wonderful
things. I am amazed at the diversity from place to place. I know they will enjoy their visit as much as we will enjoy having them.

I like mine wth lettuce and tomato

OK, you are probably singing or hearing Jimmy Buffet's song (at least in your mind), but I am thinking gardens. I don't have a green thumb. In fact, I think my thumb is atrophied and black. My father had a natural talent for gardening, as does my husband. My talent leans more toward preparing what the men are able to grow.
Last year we were fortunate enough to purchase an older (built in the early 1960's) home with a little better than 2 acres of land. We like the house and love the land.
For years we had lived in a doublewide mobile home on a small plot of earth. We literally had to park very specific places to ensure that all vehicles could be moved without having to move another. I had the prime parking spot because when mama ain't happy nobody is and I needed to be closer to the house because I purchased the many groceries 3 teenage boys, a hungry husband, a young daughter and myself plus a minimum of 8 daycare kids could consume albeit I had plenty of help getting them inside. Next was the honey's spot. He paid the majority of the bills so of course he ranked second and seniority should have some privileges. The boys had to make do with what was left. One could park at an angle at the very end of the trailer while the other had to park outside of the fence beneath the overhanging branches of the pecan tree. This was only feasible after we took part of the fence down which widened the entrance and after both of my new vehicles had been run in by one or the other of our sons when they were new and unexperienced drivers.
Now we enjoy ample parking space and have little need to worry that vehicles can not be maneuvered safely from one place to another. We also have plenty of room for our pool, two outbuildings, a few other recreational vehicle are parked and a large garden. We have it all except the large garden.
Larry just has not had the time or the inclination to till the land with our small tiller. He claims the tiller has to be "tinked on" before it will even work. I was able to get him to plant a few okra seeds, 4 tomatoe plants, a mixture of lettuce and mixed greens, some onion sets, two cucumber plants, some carrots and a couple of bell pepper plants.
We had a bounty of lettuce. We have eaten lettuce on sandwiches, in salads both cool crisp lettuce and that which had hot dressing poured over it for a wilted salad. It was quite tasty and enjoyed by all. Unfortunately, it has been feast or famine. Our lettuce is gone. The feast is over.
Now we are enjoying an abundance of tomatoes. Delicious fresh from the vine. More than I care to eat. I only like tomatoes with certain foods. Now I love canning or freezing tomatoes! This morning I prepared the remaining ripened tomatoes into fresh salsa and froze the rest. I feel like a queen in the kitchen.
As for the rest of our produce. The okra is off to a slow start, but seems to be more productive so there is hope yet. The carrots have a ways to go but we will have a good amount when it is time for the "harvest". I can can some of them as well. The onions have gone to seed, the bulbs dug and dried. The cukes have been adequate but are slowing down. Lastly, the bell peppers were evidently planted in poor soil and have done very poorly. We have picked a few with long intervals between our pickings.
Last year we were fortunate to have plenty of blueberries. This year was not as plentiful thanks to the very hungry birds. Our apples are inedible unless they are cooked with plenty of sugar and they are not very plentiful either, but who cares since they aren't very tasty anyway! Last year we missed our prolific pecan tree (the one the boys had to park their truck beneath). This year it looks as if the pecan trees we have hear will produce enough pecans for one pie or several garnishments unless we have a windstorm or hurricane before they fully ripen.
We have been blessed to enjoy the fruits of our labors (or the labors of those who lived here before us). Next year I want a real garden with rows and rows of vegetables. I want to see the results line the shelves of my cupboard and freezer. I want to utilize a decent portion of the land we have been able to acquire.
Perhaps we will plant in hay bales if necessary! What are those sayings? Oh yeah, "Where there is a will there is a way" and again, "If mama ain't happy..." . Fortunately, mama is usually kept happy!

Memories...

1. As a comment on my blog, leave one memory that you and I had together. It doesn't matter if you knew me a little or a lot, anything you remember!
2. Next, re-post these instructions on your blog and see how many people leave a memory about you. If you leave a memory about me, I'll assume you're playing the game and I'll come to your blog and leave one about you. I'm excited to read the comments!

Old, New and Comfortable

Old, New and Comfortable... that's what my friends represent. Whether they are old, longtime friends or new found friends I feel quite comfortable among them. We share good times, bad times, sorrows, triumphs, and piddly things. We share important dates and close secrets. We band together. We enjoy one another. We are comfortable!

Friends are the next best thing to family. I suppose in some ways they are "chosen family".

I was pleasantly surprised this week as I heard from a long ago friend. It was nice to be able to catch up on her and her family. I was also pleasantly surprised to have a dropin visitor. At first I didn't recognize him. He didn't recognize me either. Time has a way of creeping up on us and age takes its toll and vim, vigor, and sometimes our physical beauty. (not by any means implying that I was ever beautiful but perhaps decent or fairly attractive at some point). After asking if I could help him I caught the voice and as I looked closer I saw the resemblance of the man I had last seen 17 years ago! Our visit was long and sweet. I was comfortable in his presence. I could have closed my eyes and been fooled in thinking I was in a time warp!

Many friends drift out of our lives, but never from our hearts and minds.

I am thankful for each of my friends. I hope you count me as one of yours.

Kinston Stake Palmyra Youth Trip

Last week we had the privilege of traveling with about 300 youth to Plamyra, NY. The kids were wonderful even while on the long bus ride.

We ran into a bit of trouble at the motel with the room assignments but all was quickly in check. The elevators were old and slow like a crippled grandparent so most of the group took the stairs. Room accomodations were great. If I could have, I would have been tempted to bring the comforter home with me. It was a nice heavy comforter that felt and looked good.

The highlight of the trip for me was the Hill Cumorah pageant. http://www.lds.org/placestovisit/location/0,10634,1831-1-1-1,00.html

We had dinner on the grounds and enjoyed plenty of time to meet the cast members. The production was great. If you are in the area during the time of the performances I would encourage you to take the time to see it.

It was a quick and busy trip. We really could have spent another day or two in the area touring. I am grateful for the opportunity to go with the youth.
